Aarnivalkeat is a fascinating mixture of skilled Finnish tap-dance, strong emotional atmospheres and challenging rhythms. The work is based on nature, and even though it heavily relies on Finnish mythology, it draws its inspiration from modern culture as well. In addition, the work sets the rhythms produced by tap shoes and the body into the spheres of Finnish nature.

The framework of the story-line is built on the idea of will-o'-the-wisps that appear in forests, swamps and other isolated environments. Man encounters them in nature and has to process universal emotional repertoire. According to mythology the will-o'-the-wisps can mislead one lost, but on the other hand they are told to be burnings on a treasure.

On stage we meet young Finnish top-tap-dancers, who have performed, for example, as members of the Feet Beat Tap Ensemble on festivals in New York City and Latvia. KIPUNA is a new collaboration. The group started working together in the fall of 2006, although the dancers have worked together on different occasions during the past five years.

Aarnivalkeat premiered at Kanneltalo, a cultural centre in Helsinki, May 9th 2007. The performance was a part of the cultural events organized by the City of Helsinki Cultural Office during the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. www.kanneltalo.fi Check out the Photo Gallery for photos from the premiere!
